8 September
It might be an international break but there are still plenty of nuggets to unearth from Matchweek 4 to keep us entertained :
PROMOTED CLUBS’ PROLONGED AGONY
Sheffield United’s draw against Everton was the first, and up to now, only point the promoted clubs have gained. This is only the second time in Premier League history that the three promoted clubs have failed to win after 10 matches*. Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United have scored 9 goals and conceded 27 to date and all face tricky away fixtures in the next round of matches, so the wait for a win might stretch for a little longer.
*After a quick double check the 2004/05 season was worse for Palace, Norwich and West Brom who didn’t manage a victory between them until MW8 after 21 winless matches.
DEJA VU FOR PALACE
Before Sunday’s game against Wolves, the last time Palace scored three second-half goals at Selhurst was on 11 September 2021 against Tottenham. That was their fourth game of that season and the Wolves game was also Palace’s fourth this season. Odsonne Edouard scored twice in both games – the only times the French striker has scored more than once for the Eagles.
GOALS GALORE
There were 41 goals scored in the 10 matches of Matchweek 4, with 13 of 20 clubs scoring at least twice. Overall, after 39 matches, 127 goals have been scored at an average of 3.26 per match, which easily outstrips the PL record that was set last season of 2.85 goals per match. If the current rate is maintained, 1,237 goals will be scored in the season which will be 153 more than in 2022/23.
