Premier League Nuggets 2023/24

10 November MW11

BLADES LEAVE IT LATE

Oliver Norwood’s 100th minute penalty against Wolves finally secured Sheffield United’s first win of the season. They shot up to four points and on the same tally as Burnley who set a record of six successive home defeats from start of season. The Clarets also lost their last two home matches of their previous PL season so their last win at Turf Moor was 24 April 2022 against none other than Wolves.

NORTH LONDON FALL

Amidst all the brouhaha of VAR controversy both Arsenal and Tottenham lost the only remaining unbeaten records this season. Spurs’ capitulation to Chelsea was the second match this season at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium that a team has had two players sent off, bringing the total of red cards for the season to 25. Nicolas Jackson’s hat-trick at Tottenham was the sixth this season, by contrast there were only eight in the whole of the previous campaign.

LATE, LATE SHOW

Two of Jackson’s goals were scored in added time and with four others scored  after 90th minute, 20% of the 30 goals scored in MW11 came in the ever-expanding zone that is added time. So far this season the number of goals scored after 75th minute is over 26% with 88 out of 333. That proportion is by far the highest since VAR was introduced in 2019/20.
