During the international break attention shifted towards off the pitch issues.
MANAGERIAL MERRY-GO-ROUND STUCK
As we near the end of November there is yet to be a managerial departure during the season (Julien Lopetegui left Wolves in the week prior to the beginning of the season). This is a rarity in the Premier League era as underlined by the fact that only five times in the previous 31 seasons has there been no change at the top by December.
Ian Porterfield was dismissed by Chelsea in February 1993 and in 1995/96 Roy McFarland by Bolton in January, were the only bosses sacked in those respective seasons. In 2010/11, 2014/15 and 2020/21 the first managerial casualties all came in December Chris Hughton at Newcastle, Neil Warnock at Palace and Slaven Bilic at West Brom.
EVERTON DOWN BUT NOT OUT
Everton will hardly need any geeing-up for the visit of Manchester United this weekend. As discussed in greater detail here – https://bit.ly/3G9viPF – Everton have become only the third Premier League club to be docked points. Their 10-point penalty for breaking financial rules is the harshest of all three, as Blackburn were deducted three points in 1996-97 and Portsmouth nine points in 2009-10.
In the previous two seasons, Everton would have been relegated if that sanction had been imposed, but you have to go back twenty years to find the last time before then that they would have been relegated with such a deduction. United could well feel the sense of grievance at Goodison Park on Sunday.
