15 December MW 16
VILLA HOME COMFORTS
By beating Arsenal and Manchester City in quick succession at Villa Park, Aston Villa secured their 14th and 15th successive Premier League home wins. A run that stretches back to February when they lost 4-2 to Arsenal. Over those 15 matches they have scored 39 goals and conceded just 7 goals and during this run no away side has scored more than once. Only three teams have had a longer winning streak in the Premier League:
Liverpool 24 [February 2019-July 2020]
Manchester City 20 [March 2011-March 2012]
Manchester United 19 [October 2010-October 2011]
HATTERS RISE
When Luton lost their first two matches of the season by three goals (4-1 at Brighton and 3-0 at Chelsea) it seemed as though the die was cast. But they have managed to turn things around as illustrated by their last two matches in which they were leading both Arsenal and Manchester City and ended up losing by a single goal. Most of their matches have been close run affairs, indeed in their last 13 matches there has only once been more than one goal in it, unsurprisingly that was a 3-1 defeat at Villa – see above.
GOAL GLUT
Although MW16 was not quite the goalfest of previous weeks there were still a healthy 27 goals and with a current total of 499, the average goals per game is 3.12. There have only been three goalless draws in the 160 matches so far, at a rate of one every 53 matches. By contrast last season there were 22 in the 380 matches, which is an average of one every 17 matches. This season 0-0 is the 17th most common score whereas last season it was the 7th most common.
