2023/24 Premier League Nuggets

22 December MW 17

OFF, OFF, OFF, OFF, OFF

In a season littered with red cards even last weekend’s flurry of dismissals was quite something. Only once before in Matchweek 2 have there been as many as five. The Brentford Villa match was the third this season to feature two sending-offs, but the first to have one from each side as Ben Mee and Boubacar Kamara were sent off in a fiery second half.

Yves Bissouma picked up his second red of the season at Forest with Tottenham now leading the way alongside Liverpool with four each. Bissouma joins Mario Lemina and Oli McBurnie on the (very) naughty step as double offenders.

Pretty much the only thing of note in the Liverpool Manchester United game was Diogo Dalot’s quickfire pair of yellow cards that culminated in a red late in the game for excessive ranting. All over a disputed throw-in, oh no Diogo. The running total for dismissals this season now stands at 37, with the record of 75 well in sight as there are over 200 matches remaining.

ANFIELD STALEMATE

The Anfield match did not add to the 21 goals from the other eight matches so it was a relatively sedate weekend overall with an average of 2.33 goals pre game but the average is still above 3. It should be of no great surprise that this match was goalless as this was the fourth time out of the last eight Premier League meetings between these sides at Anfield that have ended 0-0.

It was only the fourth goalless draw of the season and at the current rate of one every 42 matches there will only be nine throughout the entire season. The lowest tally so far in the Premier League is 21 so that’s another landmark that could be reached this season alongside most red cards, most goals and most own goals. Watch this space…
