‘It Started With a Kick’

As ‘It Started With a Kick’ podcast launched this week the focus of today’s post is unashamedly all about the podcast rather than Premier League Nuggets.

The simple premise behind the pod is interviewing a wide selection of well-known fans and leading figures from the world of football talk about the first match they attended. The opening episode features commentator Darren Fletcher who reminisces about his first match in February 1980 – a 4-0 win for Forest against Manchester City that included a Trevor Francis hat-trick and more memorably for Darren a missed John Robertson penalty.

The discussion covers a huge range of subjects from the beauty of ‘clean’ kits to the atrocious state of the City Ground pitch; from his grandfather taking him to matches with his stool for a better view to Kenny Burns signing his plaster cast. There is plenty more besides and it’s a hugely enjoyable look back at a special time for Forest under Brian Clough. Indeed there is so much to pack in to this episode that it’s a 2-parter.

The episodes will keep coming at you every week from now on and the next guest is the esteemed football writer Jim White. Jim’s father ignored the fact that Best, Charlton and Law were strutting their stuff down the road at Old Trafford and took him to Altrincham vs Barrow instead.

Future guests include Match of the Day’s Guy Mowbray, the Guardian cartoonist David Squires and Chris Sutton.

If you haven’t already give the pod a listen, if you like it subscribe/follow, if you love it tell all your friends to get on board with ‘It Started With a Kick’
