PREMIER LEAGUE NUGGETS – MatchWeek 4
YELLOW FEVER
Chelsea’s late victory at Bournemouth on Saturday night was not the most exciting match but it did set a Premier League record for yellow cards, racking up fourteen in total, including five in the space of a frenetic six first half minutes. The previous record was twelve, which had been recorded twice before, most recently when Chelsea were also involved after they denied Tottenham the title in the 2015/16 season as Spurs amassed nine bookings in their frustration.
The rash of yellows in the Bournemouth Chelsea match contributed to another Premier League record as last weekend’s games clocked up 65 in the ten matches – the most over a MatchWeek. The naughty step was overcrowded with only one club not picking up a booking and that was the saintly Crystal Palace.
SINGING THE (LATE) BLUES
A few weeks before Bournemouth enjoyed their own late winner, having been 2-0 down in 87th minute at Goodison when Luis Sinisterra popped in their third in the 96th minute. This was the latest that any Premier League team had come back to win after being two goals down. But not content with that, Everton then proceeded to repeat the dose at Villa Park, having been 2-0 up after 27 minutes. This was only the second time that a team had surrendered a two goal lead in successive league matches and the other team was none other than our old friends Bournemouth who did so in October /November 2022 when losing 3-2 to Tottenham at home, followed by surrendering a 3-1 lead at Elland Road the following week.
It Started With a Kick
This week’s guest is Adrian Clarke, who was at Arsenal for six years before he went up and down the divisions, appearing at each of the top seven tiers of English football. Adrian grew up as an Ipswich fan and tells the story of how he finally got Alan Brazil to sign his Junior Blue photo many years later when they worked together at talkSPORT. Adrian relates how he was compared to Steve McManaman, why the media is full of ex-Arsenal players and how Ronnie Whelan was not into set pieces. When he was on loan at Hendon he was told that after training sessions you would be fined if you didn’t have a pint.
