PREMIER LEAGUE NUGGETS – MatchWeek 5
BEES LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE
When Bryan Mbeumo smashed the ball into Tottenham’s goal after just 23 seconds it almost exactly mirrored Yoanne Wissa’s opener at the Etihad the previous week. Wissa’s was actually a second faster but in so doing, Brentford set a Premier League record for the fastest back-to-back opening goals. By coincidence the record was previously held by Manchester City, in 2019 Sergio Agüero scored the opening goal against Newcastle in 24 seconds and then a relatively leisurely 46 seconds in their next game against Arsenal.
The two goals followed a remarkably similar routine – from the kick-off the ball was played back to Mark Flekken, who launched the ball deep into the opposition’s half where both Manchester City and Tottenham lost possession. Having recovered the ball, it was then played out wide before being crossed into the penalty area and the goals duly arrived. Unfortunately for Brentford, both games also followed a similar pattern in that by the half hour mark they were behind and ultimately lost (2-1 to City and 3-1 to Tottenham).
It Started With a Kick
Episode 25’s guest is Seb White who is the founder and editor-at-large of Mundial, which describes itself as the football magazine for those who love the beautiful game. He’s also no stranger to the world of podcasts, co-hosting Mundial’s “Reminding You Why You Love Football,” which is a natural partner to this show.
Seb is a Yeovil Town fan and the first match he remembers clearly was an FA Cup tie against QPR in 1988 on the legendary Huish slope which was a shock to a QPR side that played on a plastic pitch. The Londoners might also have been taken aback by the appearance of a streaker on a chilly January afternoon in the West country but they weren’t put off, winning 3-0.
