Premier League Nuggets 2024/25 Match Week 9. Episodes 29 and 30 of “It Started With a Kick”. Wednesday 13 November live show with Pat Nevin

PREMIER LEAGUE NUGGETS – MatchWeek 9

TOP AND TAIL

Looking at Brentford’s position in the table there is a neat symmetry as they are ninth after nine matches. They have won four, lost four and drawn one, scoring 18 and conceding 18. But that hardly tells the story of the drama that has unfolded in their season so far.

As has been pointed out before the Bees had a remarkable run of scoring early, within the first two minutes in four consecutive games. Added to this they have scored two goals after the 90th minute with Bryan Mbeumo’s winner against Ipswich the latest in the 96th minute. With a third of their goals coming at opposite ends of match time, the advice to anyone going to watch them is don’t arrive late or leave early.

It Started With a Kick

Episode 29 featured Dan Rutstein who follows AFC Wimbledon from 6,000 miles away in Los Angeles. Among his varied career he was a diplomat, a journalist, a former referee and now runs Orange County FC. His first match watching Wimbledon was in 1989 when John Fashanu scored only goal of the game against Manchester City and he once wrote a column for Shaun Goater in a Bermudan newspaper called ‘Feed the Goat’.

Episode 30’s guest is James Tippett who has written a couple of books about xG and is a Brentford fan who once worked for SmartOdds, which was run by Brentford owner Matthew Benham. The first goal James saw live was probably the best, an absolute screamer by Glenn Poole, as sweetly struck a volley as you are likely to see. Strangely James’ first two matches outside the UK involved Club Brugge, at home to Manchester City and then away at Paris St. Germain.
