PREMIER LEAGUE NUGGETS – MatchWeek 20
TOTTENHAM MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Whatever has been said about Tottenham this season, and there has already been plenty, one of the most remarkable things is how they have managed to have a healthy goal difference of +12 despite being 12th in the table. There are currently only three clubs with a better goal difference than Spurs while Forest who have the second highest tally of 40 points have an inferior goal difference to Postecoglou’s men. Tottenham have lost exactly half of their twenty games, the same as Ipswich who are in the relegation zone abut are the second highest scorers after Liverpool.
If they were to continue their current form during the rest of the season, they would end up with a goal difference of +23 and could still be in the bottom half of the table. To put that into context, in 19 of the 32 Premier League seasons there has been no club with a positive goal difference in the lower half. Only once in Premier League history has a club that finished in the bottom half of the table managed to register a positive goal difference in double figures, when 13th placed Everton had a goal difference of +10 in 1999/2000.
It Started With a Kick – Episode 39
Sky Sports’ Lynsey Hooper is this week’s guest. A Wolves supporter, Lynsey was following in her grandfather’s footsteps, who was Club secretary and a scout. Her first match unusually was a pre-season friendly, when Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United arrived at Molineux in August 1994. Naturally, Steve Bull scored Wolves’ goal in the 2-1 defeat.
Lynsey recounts how she was once told that she would need to lose her Wolverhampton accent if she wanted to pursue a career in the media.
Other highlights of the episode include how Wolves’ triumph in the 2003 Play-Offs Final coincided with the deadline for her dissertation at Loughborough University and an awkward interview with Dean Saunders after a 2-1 loss at Charlton left them in the relegation zone and destined for relegation to the third tier.
