PREMIER LEAGUE NUGGETS – MatchWeek 21
SAME OLD STORY AT THE BOTTOM
Brentford’s two late goals on Tuesday night further loosened Manchester City’s previously icy grip on the Premier League title while things at the other end of the table took on a familiar look. At the same stage last season the three promoted clubs occupied the relegation places with Sheffield United in 20th on 10 points and just above them Burnley on 12 with Luton on 16.
After this week’s matches there is an almost identical picture for the trio of clubs that came up from the Championship. Southampton occupy last place on 6 points, in 19th are Leicester on 14 and Ipswich have 16. Last season, and only for the second time in Premier League history, all three promoted clubs were relegated and the prospect of an immediate repeat is a distinct possibility.
It Started With a Kick – Episode 40
This week’s guest is football writer Harry Pearson, who has written a raft of excellent books about football and especially football in the North East. Harry also hosts the When Saturday Comes podcast along with another guest on this show, Daniel Gray and like Daniel Harry is a Middlesbrough fan.
Harry’s father was not really into football but picked up plenty of football lingo at work, including ‘That’ll be Slaven” referring to Bernie Slaven’s propensity to being offside even though he had no clue who Slaven was. He regales us with numerous stories including the ‘Squeeze’ at Ayresome Park, the ‘lurking’ Arthur Horsfield and one of my favourite tales of all these podcasts about how his ex-wife’s first entry into a football ground involved taking a bag of knives and a cleaver into The Den – it’s well worth a listen.
