Episode 46 and 47 of ‘It Started With a Kick’

No Premier League action last week so double dose of ‘It Started With a Kick’.

First up BBC Scotland’s Phil Goodlad who grew up on the island of Yell one of the Shetland Isles, and you is the first guest on this podcast to hail not only from Yell [population 966], or the Shetland Isles. His first taste of football came via convoluted route of tracking down who owned a video recorder on the island and when it would be possible to visit. The first match he actually went to involved an overnight ferry to Aberdeen, then a coach to Glasgow to watch Aberdeen play Dundee in 1995 League Cup Final. The envy of Phil and his schoolmates’ was Stephen Glass, who won a mountain bike as the prize for Man of the Match.

Episode 47 features Adam Virgo, who played for his hometown club Brighton in two spells as well as a couple of seasons at Celtic under Gordon Strachan. Having spent over a decade being a pundit on the National League for BT Sport/TNT he recently had his first stint as a co-commentator for ITV. Adam’s time at Brighton coincided with them playing at the Withdean Stadium where the likes of Fabrizio Ravanelli was among the opposition who found it difficult to adapt to the ramshackle surroundings. When Adam was at Celtic, he recalls playing at Ibrox and having Rangers fans trying to get their arms through the windows of the changing room after Tommy Burns unwisely threw a milkshake at them.
