It Started With a Kick – Episode 50 : Tony Pastor

Having reached episode 50 it’s fitting that this week’s guest is Tony Pastor who along with Gray Lineker co-founded the leading podcast production company, Goalhanger Films. Tony is a Burnley fan whose first match was away at Deepdale to face local rivals Preston North End in 1979. Tony talks about how Burnley is unusual, if not unique, in that the whole town supports their local team rather than one of the more glamorous clubs.

His recollections include the threat of being relegated out of the Football League in 1987 including, going to Crewe in penultimate match and having to throw money into a bucket to get into the ground. Burnley lost that match courtesy of a David Platt goal and left them teetering on the brink of non-league football. He also recalls how he celebrated Owen Coyle’s sacking from Bolton Wanderers as Coyle had abandoned Burnley in their first Premier League season. In happier times one of his most enjoyable matches was actually a defeat, but the fact that it was to Olympiacos in Athens made it memorable in many ways.
