Premier League MatchWeek 34
UP DOWN, UP DOWN
And so it came to pass. What had been pretty much nailed on for many weeks, nay months, happened. Liverpool won their second Premier League title with four matches remaining while Ipswich became the third of the promoted clubs to go straight back down after Leicester and Southampton gave up the ghost a while ago. In repeating the fate of last season’s trio of clubs returning to the Championship, a worrying pattern is emerging, especially considering it had only happened once in the previous 31 seasons.
This season’s relegation fodder have still only mustered ten wins between them so they need to start motoring to overtake the fourteen victories by last season’s terrible trio. Mind you, the good news is Leicester are playing both Southampton and Ipswich so there is a chance for salvation. Their overall points total will be boosted by at least four and so they could yet overhaul the 66 set by Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United in 2023/24. Exciting times ahead.
It Started With a Kick – Episode 55 : Tim Vickery
Tim will be a familiar voice / face to many of you as the BBC’s correspondent on South American football. Tim moved to Brazil some 30 years ago in 1994 initially to teach English, which he describes as ‘a moment of lunacy’ but has turned out well as he has become an authority on all football matters in South America and especially Brazil.
In this episode Tim talks about the importance of how a football match involves so much more than the 90 minutes on the pitch, which was especially true for him as a child who was often car sick on the way to those early matches. His first game was unusually an England Schoolboys International between England and Scotland at Wembley. He also talks about how the 1986 World Cup was his ‘lightbulb moment’ and how it led him to his career in journalism.
