It Started With a Kick – Episode 63 : John Acres
John Acres is a reporter/commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live and Final Score, he also hosts breakfast show on BBC Radio Devon and therefore it will be no great surprise to learn that John’s first match was at Home Park in November 1986. It was something of a humdinger, a top-of-the-table clash against Oldham Athletic and during the match he was actually pitch side and had to move for players to take corners. Only a few weeks before this match I made my only visit to Home Park, which went from bad to worse.

John pays tribute to the Argyle legend Tommy Tynan, the ultimate ‘fox in the box’, talks about despite never being in the top flight how Plymouth fans are pretty happy with their lot. For a while John worked at BBC Stoke during the Tony Pulis era and cites the Potters’ 5-0 victory over Bolton in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final as one of the favourite matches on which he has reported. He also recalls how an experienced journalist helped him when reporting on his first match with some sage advice which he has used ever since.
