It Started With a Kick – Episode 64 : Owen Williams

Owen is an experienced sports news producer at the BBC, having worked there for over 30 years and he has also worked for Sky Sports as head of editorial for their digital media. He now does a range of work including lecturing and mentoring up and coming sports journalists at the University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), based at Wembley Stadium.

Owen’s first match was at St. James Park when it would be fair to say that there was less focus on the action on the pitch and much more on the events off the pitch. The match ended goalless, but during the game a petrol bomb was thrown into the West Ham fans at St. James Park. He also talks about Newcastle’s heroic failure in 1996/97 and how losing to Manchester United 1-0 at home ‘having battered them’, was more of a blow to their title chances than the famous 4-3 loss at Anfield a few weeks later. To balance that out he describes the joy of finally winning a trophy in Carabao Cup and how much it meant to the fans and the club.
