It Started With a Kick – Episode 65 : Phil Harrison

Phil Harrison runs the Fussball Geekz podcast which casts an eye over Eastern European football and especially Albania and East Germany. His books such as ‘Inside the Hermit Kingdom : Football Stories from inside Stalinist Albania’ and the ‘Worst Game Ever’ which delves into particularly painful football memories of 19 different clubs across Europe.

Almost uniquely, Phil grew up in a Villa family and his first match was at Villa Park and the visit of Oldham Athletic in April 1975. However, at the age of fourteen he made a decision that he had to keep quiet from his nearest and dearest as he switched allegiance to Villa’s arch rivals, Birmingham City. Also strangely, Phil recalls that for his first match at St. Andrews he was in the away end with Manchester United fans who didn’t take kindly to getting spanked 5-1.
