It Started With a Kick Episode 68 : Miguel Pereira

Miguel is a Portuguese writer /historian, whose most recent book is ‘Pasion’, is a journey to the soul of Spanish football and having also written books about Portuguese football he is an expert on Iberian football. Unsurprisingly, Miguel’s first match was in Portugal at the tender age of three, to watch Porto play Penafiel and playing that day was club legend João Pinto, who was at the club for 16 years. Miguel tells us the story of how Pinto once played with a broken toe and hid the fact from the referee by cutting a hole in his boot and colouring his white socks black.

Talking of Porto legends, the man known as ‘King Arthur’ manager and latterly chairman Artur Jorge brought huge success to the club in the same way that Johan Cruyff did with Barcelona and Alex Ferguson did with Manchester United. Miguel also reflects on the connections between English managers, such as Malcolm Allison, and Portuguese football and how now so many Portuguese managers, such as Nuno and Marco Silva, are plying their trade in England.
