It Started With a Kick Episode 72 : Paul McQuade

Paul McQuade is the man behind The Shamrock, which describes itself as a retro fanzine by Celtic supporters that seeks to explore and celebrate the club’s incredible unbroken history. So no great surprises as to where Paul’s first port of call was, Celtic Park in 1976 when just 5 years-old.

Paul discusses the legacy of the incomparable Jock Stein and his immediate impact on the club when he took over in 1965. Stein led them to nine successive league titles between 1966 and 1974 plus many other domestic triumphs and, of course, the ultimate achievement of becoming the first British club to win the European Cup. One of Paul’s early memories was being at a packed Hampden Park to watch Scotland play Portugal only to find out he had a fear of heights.

In advance of the first Old Firm derby of the season this coming Sunday, Paul talks about the intense rivalry between Celtic and Rangers and how both can boast comparable attendances alongside the bigger English clubs, but nothing like the revenues.
