It Started With a Kick Episode 73 : Jim Proudfoot

Jim Proudfoot will be a familiar voice to many of you, a regular commentator on talkSPORT since 1999 covering all levels of football and including major tournaments such as Euros and World Cups. Also commented for various other channels including Sky and ESPN. He worked initially on local radio station DevonAir before progressing to national radio with Capital Gold alongside Jonathan Pearce. Although Jim is a Torquay supporter, he grew up many miles away in Birmingham and his first taste of football was in 1981 at Villa Park to watch the 2nd leg of the Junior Floodlit Cup Final (when such a thing existed & definitely a first for this podcast) against West Ham United.

Jim talks about how his love of Torquay is not diminished by the club’s relatively small size and lack of success, indeed he says he has never been tempted to abandon the Gulls even during the bad times, of which there have been many. He could be termed a ‘gory hunter’ (sic). One speck of glory did arrive in 1991 when they beat Blackpool on penalties in 1991 4th Division Play-Offs final. The game was won on penalties when Blackpool’s leading scorer Dave Bamber missed his spot kick, which spawned the fanzine entitled ‘Bamber’s Right Foot’.
