‘It Started With a Kick’ Episode 82 – Gary O’Reilly

As most of you will know, during his dozen or so years as a professional Gary O’Reilly played for Tottenham, Brighton and Crystal Palace, making over 200 appearances in total. We delve into his playing career but we start in 1968 when Benfica were facing Man U in European Cup at Wembley final and a very young O’Reilly was rubbing shoulders with Portuguese players including Eusebio in nearby hotel.

When he was at Arsenal as a schoolboy he was there with Malcolm McDonald, Frank Stapleton, David O’Leary and Liam ‘Chippy’ Brady. O’Reilly recalls being a ‘pain in Keith Burkinshaw’s neck as a young player at Spurs but on the upside he also got a lift to and from training with Glenn Hoddle and returned the favour when O’Reilly was at Palace with Gareth Southgate.
