It Started With a Kick Episode 85 : Steve Crossman

Steve Crossman, is one of the most familiar voices on BBC Radio5Live. Steve cut his broadcasting teeth at Boro TV as schoolboy, then wrote for local paper The Gazette and, as we record this episode on the eve of the Ashes, appropriately enough his first piece was about cricket. He got his broadcasting break soon after leaving University when a lecturer asked if he would cover Oldham v Swansea for local South Wales radio station.

His first entry into a football ground was at Ayresome Park in 1994 for a 2-1 win against Oxford United, with Alan Moore scoring the first goal Steve saw live. As a colleague of Steve Gibson, Steve’s father was involved with the consortium that had rescued Middlesbrough from the jaws of administration in 1986. Steve was a mascot a few years after his first match and had his photo taken with a bemused Branco and the majestic Fabrizio Ravanelli as well as shaking hands with Arsenal captain on the day, Martin Keown. He also recalls the agony of when Born were relegated in 1996/97 because of a points education and the ecstasy of winning the first major trophy in 2004 with League Cup victory over Bolton.
