Premier League Nuggets 2023/24

After Match Week 2 a few patterns are emerging, including a rather ominous sign for the promoted clubs and some impressive achievements by a few of the London clubs.

POINTLESS PROMOTION: BURNLEY, LUTON & SHEFFIELD UNITED

Sheffield United’s loss against Nottingham Forest was the 4th defeat suffered by the three promoted clubs. Only once before in the Premier League have the promoted clubs lost their opening four fixtures. In the 1993/94 season Newcastle, Swindon and West Ham did not register a point in their first six matches combined.

CAST IRON: WEST HAM

Following their 3-1 win against Chelsea, West Ham have racked up 1,302 points in their 1,036th Premier League match, and in so doing became only the tenth club to reach 1,300 points.

LONDON CALLING I: ARSENAL

Arsenal’s victory against Palace on Monday was their thirteenth consecutive unbeaten derby match, in which they have won eleven and drawn two. Their last defeat to a London club in the Premier League was to Spurs in May 2022.

LONDON CALLING II: BRENTFORD

Brentford have a similarly impressive record in derby matches, the Bees are currently on a run of eleven unbeaten in the league [6 wins, 5 draws]. Their last defeat was in September 2022 against none other than Arsenal. If they avoid defeat against Palace on Saturday they will beat their previous top flight unbeaten derby record, which was set way back in 1955.
