Premier League MatchWeek 15/16 Episode 36 ‘It Started With a Kick’

PREMIER LEAGUE NUGGETS – MatchWeek 15/16

BRENTFORD’S HOMESICKNESS Part 16

Having dispatched Newcastle 4-2 the previous week to record their seventh home win, in Week 16 Brentford travelled the few miles to Stamford Bridge to continue their away day travails with a 2-1 loss. Having amassed 22 points out of a possible 24 at the Gtech stadium they have still only garnered one point on the road, which came at Goodison Park when they were down to ten men for the whole of second half.

With 96% of their points collected at home so far the Bees are on course to record the largest disparity between home and away form. In the very first Premier League season Leeds United collected 44 points at Elland Road, losing just once, while away they did not register a single victory and seven draws gave them just 14% of their points total.

It Started With a Kick – Episode 35

This week’s guest is the venerable Pat Murphy who has been a familiar voice reporting on football for the BBC with Radio 2 and 5Live over the last 40 years. Pat’s introduction to football could hardly have been more dramatic as he attended Hampden Park in 1960 to see the mighty Real Madrid with Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano both scoring hat-tricks in the 7-3 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt. Talk about starting on a high. Amongst the record crowd of 127,000 were Billy Bremner, Jimmy Johnstone, Alex Ferguson, Jim McLean and Craig Brown who all went on to be major influences on British football.

Pat also reveals that as a young reporter covering Peterborough United for the local paper he had the innovative idea of calling up some of the leading managers of the day – Bill Shankly, Joe Mercer, Ron Saunders – to ask them what they would advise for the club that was 92nd in the league. Talking of managers he also tells us about how he had to wait to interview Brain Clough for six hours, but how it was worth the wait. His first interview with Gary Lineker was when he was a shy, skinny lad breaking through at Leicester City in 1981.

  1. Fos,

You forgot to mention that yet again Brighton’s first home loss of the season was to their superiors from South London.
