It Started With a Kick Episode 69 : Richard Shaw
Richard was at Palace as a youth and made his debut in late 1980s, embarking on a playing career that lasted for over 20 years, with a 10-year stint at Coventry before finishing at Millwall. Richard took up coaching while still a player and has worked alongside current England Under-21s coach Lee Carsley at Coventry. He returned to Palace to be in charge of Under-23s but before delving into his playing and coaching career, his first game was at Loftus Road in 1979 when Burnley were hammered 7-0 by QPR.
Talking of hammering, Shaw was on the bench the night Palace were beaten 9-0 at Anfield and manager Steve Coppell chose not to put him into the line of fire. However, Shaw did play against Liverpool later that season in the famous FA Cup semi-final which turned out better for the Eagles. Shaw talks about how the Palace team of that era was based more on characters and spirit rather than technical abilities. He also talks fondly of assistant manager Alan Smith as his ‘second dad’ who looked after him in his early days at Palace.
