It Started With a Kick Episode 78 : Gideon Coe
Gideon’s voice will be well-known to many of you as he has been a stalwart of BBC Radio 6 Music since its inception in 2002, some 23 years ago. Before then he worked on BT Club Call, which led to some interesting encounters with likes of David Dein and Ron Noades. Gideon moved to GLR in 1994 as sports reporter before working with Fi Glover, picking up a few Sony Awards on the way. Gideon’s a Tottenham fan but his first match involved their London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 1973.
Amongst his early heroes were the majestic Glenn Hoddle and inimitable Paul Gascoigne – the best players he has ever seen live and that includes Lionel Messi. He recounts the difficulty of watching 1987 FA Cup Final in Coventry where he was a student and having to hide away for a day as the city celebrated their famous victory. Gideon finds it increasingly difficult to engage with modern football and often goes into a news blackout during matches, to be interrupted by messages from his brother announcing that ‘Tottenham are shit’.
