World Cup 2026 Week 4

After that noteworthy 3-2 win over Mexico at Azteca England have reached their eleventh World Cup quarter-final so time to look at the previous nine.

  1. 1954 : Nat Lofthouse and Tom Finney scoring the goals in a 4-2 loss to Uruguay.
  2. 1962 : A 3-1 loss to eventual champions Brazil, best known for Jimmy Greaves carrying a dog from the pitch who then urinated on his shirt.
  3. 1966 : 1-0 win over Argentina in a match that is remembered for Antonio Rattin’s reluctance to leave the field after being sent off rather than Geoff Hurst’s first World Cup goal
  4. 1970 : England were coasting to victory over West Germany at 2-0 up with twenty odd minutes remaining but eventually lost 3-2 after extra time, ruining the 10th birthday party of yours truly.
  5. 1986 : Back in Mexico and a 2-1 loss, courtesy of Diego Maradona’s hand and feet
  6. 1990 : An edgy 3-2 win over Cameroon secured by a pair of Gary Lineker penalties and a David Platt goal
  7. 2002 : Another loss to Brazil, an early Michael Owen goal offered some hope only to be extinguished by a Rivaldo equaliser and that Ronaldinho free-kick
  8. 2006 : A drab goalless draw enlivened by Wayne Rooney’s red card and a penalty shoot-out in which only Owen Hargreaves scored
  9. 2018 : A pretty straightforward 2-0 win over Sweden with goals from Harry Maguire and Dele Alli
  10. 2022 : A Harry Kane penalty miss costs us dear as France run out 2-1 winners
