‘It Started With a Kick’ Episode 114 : Marc Higginson
This week’s guest is Marc Higginson, who has worked at BBC Sport for over fifteen years, covering primarily cricket but also football another sports. Marc has a book coming out in October entitled “Falling for Manchester City”, which chronicles a period in which Manchester City were going through some slightly less successful times than over the last decade or so. The book includes the final years at Maine Road and how City ended up in the third tier and naturally features ‘The Great Escape’ aka 1999 Second Division Play-Offs Final.
Before joining the BBC, Marc worked for the Bolton News, covering not only Bolton Wanderers under Sam Allardyce but also Bury, before their sad demise in 2019, a reminder of life at the other end of the league pyramid. He also reveals how Palace’s win over City in the 2025 FA Cup Final brought his son to tears and that even for the modern behemoth that is Man City, things can still go awry.

On the back of a successful Europa League debut as Palace hammered Lech Poznan 4-0 and also on the bidding of Julian Chenery aka The Legend pre-match at The Pawsons Arms this week’s quote looks ahead to Palace’s European campaign.
“And thence from Athens turn away our eyes
To seek new friends and stranger companies.”
Hermia’s quote is taken from the opening of Midsummer Night’s Dream and she clearly foresaw that Palace were not going to be drawn against either Greek side Olympiakos or OFI Crete in the Group phase. With trips to France, Poland and Austria to come we will definitely be seeking new friends and stranger companies in Lyon, Jagiellonia and Salzburg.
