It Started With a Kick Episode 105 : John Helm
John Helm, can be described, without fear or favour, as the patrician of football commentators. As the main commentator for Yorkshire TV his voice will be well known to all those who watched The Big Match on Sunday afternoons as he covered the likes of Leeds United, the Sheffield clubs and many more besides. John began his career on local paper the Shipley Times before progressing to the Yorkshire Post and then on to BBC Radio Leeds and Radio 2, and finally on to television.
John has covered a multitude of sports in his career, at the last count it was 39 and he famously was playing cricket on 30th July 1966, a game that ended just before 3pm when the World Cup Final kicked off. He is now the match commentator for recently-promoted Lincoln City. But as ever the starting point is the very first football match John went to, on 25th October 1952 for appropriately enough a Yorkshire derby between Bradford City and York City at Valley Parade.
